Biography
Aishah is a Muslim-American revert who embraced Islam in April of 2002 after having spent the
earlier part of the year satisfying a curiosity about Islam through an exhaustive three-months spent in
research and reading via the internet.
Since her reversion to Islam, Aishah has spent time documenting her "Journey's" as a freelance writer
through a personal website (http://www.sisteraishah.com), as she has endeavored to continue
growing in her new religion. Thus, she has become known as "Sister Aishah" - Aishah being the
Muslim name she electively chose to adopt shortly after making her Shahada (profession of faith). For
authorship purposes she is known as Aishah Schwartz.
At the end of her first year as a new Muslim, in reflecting on the personal and emotional struggles of
acceptance she encountered, Aishah deduced that there must be other new Muslimah's experiencing
some of the same anxieties, whereupon she decided to organize an e-group in support of those
sisters. The became known as Sisters4Dawah or "S4D".
S4D was launched on May 27, 2003, and by the will of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, on March 27, 2004,
Aishah was in Mecca making her first Umrah. S4D is internationally comprised of over 229 members.
Subsequent to leaving the legal field, Aishah followed her desire to work in the Muslim community
through MAS Freedom Foundation in Washington, D.C. She became interested in pursuing this area
of work after having spent much of her first year as a Muslim volunteering in various capacities within
her local community.
At MAS Freedom she had the opportunity to lead a national campaign (1, 2, 3, 4) in association with
America's Second Harvest, organized to rally the Muslim community in support of National Hunger
Awareness Day, June 7, 2005, a campaign she continued in her capacity as Founder & Director of
Muslimah Writers Alliance in June of 2006.
As a part of promoting the National Hunger Awareness campaign Aishah put together a Information
Resource Packet designed to help educate the Muslim community as to how they could participate.
The packet was distributed to Muslim organizations and masjids across the nation.
Many other things have transpired throughout Aishah's journey - here is a snapshot: Getting Her First
Henna (2002); Hanging Out on American Muslim Heritage Day in D.C. (2002); Meeting her now heart-
adopted daughter, Hanane, at the Islamic Center of Washington, DC during her First
Ramadan (2002); Meeting Penny Gross (2002) (Mason District Supervisor, Falls Church, VA) at an
Annual Multicultural Festival where she worked as a volunteer photographer; Being Interviewed for
Nile TV at the 2003 ISNA Convention; Participating in the launch of a MAS Freedom sponsored
campaign called "Voting is Power" at the National Press Club in Washington, DC (2003); Getting her
first "quote" in a CBS News story (2003); Hanging out for Iftar at the House of Representatives in D.C.
(2003); Becoming an avid activist during the campaign to Stop French President Jacques Chirac
(2004), from banning hijab in public schools and work places in France, and speaking at a protest
rally in front of the French Embassy in Washington, DC (2004) - (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8); Meeting Merve
Kavakci (Author and former TV News Anchor Fired for Wearing Hijab!) (2004) at theDC rally, and
furthering the campaign during the D.C. Armory EID Celebration (2004), (1, 2, 3, 4, 5); Sitting
between family members of a defendant in a crowded Eastern District of Virginia courtroom while
protectively safeguarding a metal box that transmitted signals to a tracking device attached to his
ankle as he testified for his freedom (2004) (he was subsequently acquitted, Al-hamdulillah! - but
subsequently retried!), and just before departing on her journey to Saudi Arabia, was featured in two
cameos for the hour-long premiere episode of the WETA-TV series "Senso Reports" - Target
Washington (2004).
During her 2004-2005 year long stay in Saudi Arabia she was blessed with the opportunity to make
several Umrah's (1, 3, 5), in addition to visiting Riyadh, Jeddah and Madinah (1, 2, 3). Before
making her exit from Saudi Arabia she was also blessed to make her first Hajj, which happened to
begin on her 2005 birthday.
In January 2006 Ms. Schwartz founded Muslimah Writers Alliance, after which she created and
launched the MWA sponsored, Muslim Women Making History project in March 2006.
In June 2006 she represented MWA at the National Hunger Symposium in Washington, D.C., and
produced and distributed a MWA member-contributed Hunger Awareness Newsletter.
August 12, 2006 brought Aishah to Washington, D.C., for the MAS Freedom Foundation sponsored
"National March on Washington" where she joined Muslims, Christians, Jews, and people of
conscience making their voices heard in protest of the atrocities committed in Lebanon and Gaza.
Demonstrators attended a rally in Lafayette Park and participated in a march around the White
House.
On August 31, 2006 Ms. Schwartz launched the Grand Mosque Equal Access for Women
(GMEA4W) campaign and online petition drive in support of her sister reporters and activists in
Saudi Arabia, which brought international media attention to a proposal that would have eliminated a
designated prayer space for women in view of the Kaba at Mecca's Grand Mosque. Eleven days
later, on September 11, 2006, in her capacity as Founder and Director of Muslimah Writers Alliance,
she embraced the Kingdom's reversal of the proposal as announced by the deputy head of the Grand
Mosque affairs.
In October/November of 2006 Aishah's journey took her to Karachi, Pakistan for a visit with friends
during the latter part of Ramadan and Eid, where she also attended a surgical procedure at Karachi's
Shamshi Hospital.
November 2006 also brought about an invitation to be a part of the Women's Islamic Initiative in
Spirituality and Equity in New York City. In the same month Ms. Schwartz was also invited to and
attended the 2nd Annual Moderation Conference for The Kuwait Ministry of Awqaf & Islamic Affairs
in Washington, D.C. (attending the latter event).
January 2007 marked the 1st Anniversary of a project near and dear to the heart of Ms. Schwartz -
Muslimah Writers Alliance - which currently has 98 members world-wide.
In February of 2007 Ms. Schwartz was contacted by ASMA (American Society for Muslim
Advancement-NY) Executive Director, Daisy Khan, to see if she was aware of the brewing
controversy over the forced divorce of a happily married couple in Saudi Arabia. Thereafter, through
Muslimah Writers Alliance, Ms. Schwartz launched the online petition drive in support of Fatima and
Mansour Al-Timani, which quickly reached over 1,000 signatures and brought international attention
to the call for guardianship reform in Saudi Arabia.
For entertainment she enjoys reading and writing about Islam, dabbling in web-development,
photography and travel.
Technically Aishah is a Michigander, however, as a general rule, when asked where she is from, she
usually replies, "South Carolina." This response derived from the fact that her children were born and
raised there, which makes South Carolina more like home than anywhere else.
